EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso Police Department has launched an internal investigation into its own officers after an off-duty police officer was involved in a minor traffic crash with State Rep. Donald "Dee" Margo.

In a news release, police officials said Margo (R-El Paso) and Alberto Machorro, an off-duty officer, were involved in a collision Sept. 7 in the 4800 block of Osborne.

"After statements were made by Machorro that 'he was willing to leave it at that,' Margo left the area. Police said when on-duty supervisors learned a police officer had been involved in a crash with a local politician, they created a police report alleging wrongdoing by Margo," the news release said. "An investigation by the Special Traffic Investigations Unity has determined those allegations are unfounded and have closed the criminal complaint."

The release does not indicate what role, if any, EPPD played in a request made to the Texas attorney general's office via the office of the El Paso city attorney to quash media access to the police report.

The release further states that an administrative investigation into the actions of police personnel is ongoing.

KFOX14 media partner the El Paso Times interviewed Margo about the crash. Margo said late Friday that he was surprised gthat the minor traffic accident was under investigation, because there was no damage to the vehicles, and he has not been contacted by police.

"I spoke to Chief (Greg) Allen the next day to see that everything was clear, and Chief Allen said, 'Don't worry about a thing.' Quote, end quote," Margo said.

EPPD said the traffic collision did not meet Texas requirements for a traffic collision report to be completed.
