City Dissolves City-County Health District

El Paso City Council moved forward Tuesday with plans to dissolve the City-County Health District.

The city is taking over most of the agency's programs from Animal Control to vaccinations.

City Council set a six-month timeline for dissolving the district, and creating a new city department.

Mayor John Cook said it's important that one elected body control the agency. He said, "I'm supportive of it, whether the county wants to run it, or the city wants to run it. But I think the days when we try to jointly run it are, should be over."

Cook said over the next six months, the city and county should work together to figure out what services the county would contract with the city for and which ones the county may take over.

One service, for example, is Vector Control, which mostly takes place outside city limits.
