City Council Hopes To Bring Bowling Championship To El Paso

By Renee Narvaiz

EL PASO, Texas —

The city of El Paso hopes to make $75 million in just over 100 days, by scoring the bid for the 2015 United States Bowling Congress' Open Championship.

Representatives from the Convention and Visitors Bureau expect this bowling event could draw 100,000 people to the borderland.

They are hoping this will put El Paso on the map.

The city voted Tuesday to spend $1.5 million to bring the championhip to the Sun City and will submit its bid soon.

The City Council will know by late summer or early fall if it has booked the event.

In 2010 El Paso hosted the women's championship with great success.

Bill Blaziek, El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau, said, "We had 40,000 bowlers and guests, but we also had 40,000 ambassadors leaving El Paso for every state in America as well as foreign countries saying, 'We had a great time, it's a very safe community'."
