Citizenship Costs Rise

The price to become an American citizen will almost double in cost.

The Bush administration announced on Wednesday that citizenship applications would go from $330 to nearly $600.

And the price for permanent legal residency would soar from $325 to more than $900.

The reason for the hefty increase are the background checks, speeding up the application process, and improving immigration offices and the technology inside them.

"I'm not saying that it is right, I'm not saying that it is wrong I'm just saying that the price of everything is going up whether you are a citizen or not," said Josh Diaz of West El Paso.

The new fees are expected to kick in around the middle of June.
