Child Abuse Convictions Reinstated

The New Mexico Supreme Court reinstated child abuse convictions against the father and uncle of Baby “Brianna.”

Both the father, Andy Walters, and uncle, Steven Lopez, had been convicted of several charges, including child abuse resulting in death and criminal sexual penetration of a minor and sentenced to more than 50 years in prison.

But their convictions were overturned last year by the court of appeals.

The Supreme Court reversed the appellate court on all convictions for each man, except conspiracy to commit intentional child abuse.

The 5-month-old child, known as Brianna, died in July 2002.
