Chemicals Removed By Dona Ana County Bomb Squad

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The Dona Ana County bomb squad has removed chemicals found Wednesday in two plastic bottles behind a Las Cruces furniture store.

Two men clearing trash and weeds Wednesday morning found bottles containing a cystal-like substance. When a worker tossed one of the bottles, it disintegrated upon impact.

There were no injuries.

Emergency personnel believe a chemical reaction inside the bottles caused the material to burst.

Las Cruces police cordoned off the area while firefighters identified the chemicals and helped the bomb squad collect the bottles for further study before they're destroyed.

Authorities would not say what the chemical was.

Officials don't know how the bottles got to the area or how long they had been there.
