Charred Body In Burning Car Found In The Desert

HORIZON CITY, Texas —

Once firefighters had put out the blaze near Horizon City on Wednesday, they quickly realized it was not a typical car fire.

The fire happened in the desert near New Britton Road, which is off of Eastlake Drive behind Eastlake High School.

Firefighters were called out around 1:30 p.m. to a report of a car fire. They put the fire out only to find a charred body in the car.

Sheriff's officials said they are treating the incident as suspicious, but they did not know whether it is drug cartel-related.

However, some residents here have no doubt. They said the fire was clean cut and happened very quickly, and they said it is the work of someone in the drug war.

"It's really scary because that's like what, 300 yards away from the house? And the kids, look, you can see the kids already coming and playing in here. There's kids always going in the dirt. There's my sons. They're 2 and 4. They're always running back and across," said Brandelyn Sellers. "I know most of the neighbors, and they know us and everything, so to think that is happening here now? And what else can you think besides drug cartels?"
