EL PASO, Texas —
Sherman Hemsley, who played George Jefferson in "The Jeffersons," died in his El Paso home Tuesday afternoon.
After a long a successful television career, Hemsley made El Paso his home.
Hemsley was born in Philidephia on Feb. 1, 1938. The actor became famous for his role as George Jefferson in the '70s sitcom "All in the Family." Then he got his own spin-off television series, "The Jeffersons," which ran from 1975 to 1985.
El Paso Police Sgt. David Gomez confirmed to KFOX14 that the iconic actor died inside his home on Tom Ulozas Street in East El Paso.
KFOX14 News found out about his death and broke the story before anyone, including the national media reported it.
KFOX14 was on the scene when paramedics were rolling out Hemsley's body on a stretcher.
Ingrid Phillips, Hemsley's neighbor and good friend said the news of his death was a shock.
"We were good friends and I have a lot of pictures of the two of us," Phillips said. "He always walked, but I haven't seen him walking a lot lately."
"He actually didn't like being called Mr. Jefferson, but he was really cool," said Crystal Briones, another neighbor. "He was really nice."
Despite his success as an actor, neighbors and friends said Hemsley wanted to be a singer and he made El Paso his home in 1998.
Hemsley did not have a wife or any children. Relatives coming in and out of his home said they were not ready to make a public statement.
El Paso Police released a statement late Tuesday stating that no foul play is suspected.
