Chaparral Team Not Going To State, Despite Better Record

CHAPARRAL, New Mexico —

The Chaparral High School girls basketball team has not been selected to compete in the state championship, despite having a better record than some other teams selected to go.

Officials with New Mexico Activities Association, which selects the teams for the First Community Bank State Basketball Championships, said the criteria is based on more than just a record.

The Lobos have a 17-10 record, compared to other schools which have been selected that have a record of 12-4.

"This morning they were so bummed out," said head coach Lydia Guerrero. She said some of the girls were crying.

"They feel that they were robbed, that they worked really hard all season and didn't get rewarded in the end," Guerrero said.

She said their district record was 0-4, and that may have hurt their chances. Guerrero also said that some of the other schools that won their division pulled off the victory because they faced weaker opponents, such as teams that only won six games.

NMAA picked the top 16 school across the state to go to the championships, and Chaparral High School ranked 17, school officials said.

"This is not an unusual situation, where a team or a school feels like they should have got in. Unfortunately, it's a part of seeding," said Robert Zayas, an associate director for NMAA.

Zayas said NMAA does not comment on the specific reasons that a team is not selected.
