Chaparral Man Wanted For Questioning In Jan. Murder Arrested

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Police said they have two brothers who were involved in a shooting on Jan. 17.

Ricardo “Ricky” Castillo, 27, of Chaparral was arrested by Border Patrol late Wednesday night after a background check indicated he was being sought by Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies. Castillo's warrant was for charges including tampering with evidence and battery related to the death of 39-year-old Jorge Rey Monje of El Paso.

Investigators said on the afternoon of Jan. 17, Castillo and his 22-year-old brother Juan Castillo got into an argument with Monje when it escalated and Monjes was shot in the chest. He later died that day. Border Patrol said Castillo’s detainment is a perfect example of cooperation between local law enforcement.

“We're very fortunate in this area because we've always had a good working relationship with authorities, counterparts not only in Texas, but New Mexico, and I think it's one of the things that makes this area efficient in terms of dealing with situations like this,” said Doug Mosier of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Juan Castillo was detained two weeks ago.
