Central El Paso Woman Fights Off Attacker In Her Own Home

EL PASO, Texas —

The incident happened Tuesday night on Mission Street. Thursday, the Mendoza family was getting work done on their front door, not because they wanted to but because they had to.

Tuesday night, an intruder ripped the screen door and made his way into their home.

"I opened the door, I was not even worried. I saw it was not my husband, so I tried to close it. He pushed it back and it hit me right here on the head. I looked at him and I said,' What do you want?' and he just punched me. It was a fight then," said Sara Mendoza.

The struggle woke up her 19-month-old daughter, who was sleeping just a few feet away on the couch.

"My main concern was I'm not gonna get on the floor because he can take my baby," she told KFOX.

After the attacker heard the baby screaming, he took off running. Mendoza isn't sure why anyone would try to get into her home then beat her.

Meanwhile, El Paso police tell KFOX robberies in El Paso are down for the year. Home burglaries went down 20 percent, business burglaries went down 17 percent, however storage shed burglaries are up.

Police want to remind everyone just because burglaries are down, doesn't mean you should let your guard down. "We are entering into the summer months and we do tend to see a light rise in the summer. This is the time we should be more aware," said Darrel Petry of the El Paso Police Department.

Police told Mendoza the man who broke in may have been homeless looking for a place to sleep.
