EL PASO, Texas —

The U.S. Postal Service is going through rough times lately, cutting down its staff size. A spokesperson for the post office tells KFOX 14 News that they've cut back on the number of full-time positions.

The post office is filling positions of those who retire, with temporary employees, which gives the department a much different look. Rural postal workers can dress casually, and can even use their own vehicles to deliver mail. A post office spokesman says temporary employees are allowed to wear casual clothes to deliver mail, up to ninety days. At that point, they have to buy the uniform with an allowance they are given.

"They have to wear decent clothes. No obscene T-shirts or anything like that. They have to wear pants or shorts. No revealing clothing, but they can wear T-shirts and shorts in the summer," U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Sam Bolen said.

He says the department is using more temporary employees right now, in order to manage their decline in budget. But when finances return to the point that they were in the past, they should be able to revive many of the full-time positions that have been put on hold.

All employees must have a valid post office photo ID badge on them. If you see someone dressed casually, delivering mail from a vehicle that is not marked, and the person does not have an ID, you are encouraged to call the Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.
