Car Slams Into Parked Van, Flips It

EL PASO, Texas —

Residents living on Bandolero Drive said they can't back out of their driveways without fearing an out of control driver will hit them, or end up in their front yard.

It's a problem KFOX first reported about in August 2008, and over the weekend one car nearly ended up inside someone's home.

“I've had 17 vehicles in my front yard in the last 14 years since I've lived here,” said Jerry McLain, who lives on the 6100 block of Bandolero Drive.

The most recent one happened Saturday at about 3:30 a.m. The driver of sports car failed to turn on the curve and drove straight into the McLain’s front yard. The crash knocked down their new landscaping rock wall, but worst of all it slammed into their minivan which was parked in the driveway. The impact flipped the van on its side and the car climb onto the van.

The van was totaled and the driver fled the scene, but El Paso police later tracked him down.

The McLain’s said they live in fear. “Yeah, we're very concerned about it. My son, his bedroom is in the front of the house, and he's very nervous,” said McLain.

The family has had their mailbox knocked over so many times, they’ve now placed it on the adjacent street. If you ask around the neighborhood, several residents will tell you similar stories of how unwanted cars have ended up in their front yard.

In August 2008, another crash on Bandolero drive was caused by a speeding driver. The crash knocked down a mailbox and ripped a bush out of its roots. Other neighbors have incorporated boulders to their landscaping to protect their homes.

“We've had petitions and gone to the city to try to get speed bumps, stop signs, barriers, anything we can. They (city engineers) come out and put two strips of rubber across the street (to measure traffic flow),” said McLain.

In the past, traffic surveys by city engineers have revealed there isn't enough traffic to take action.

However, city traffic engineers are once again looking at the Bandolero Drive, a narrow road that winds the whole way down. Posted signs along the street warn drivers about the curvy conditions, and set the speed limit at 20 mph. Most drivers KFOX caught on camera didn’t oblige by with the speed limit. The city’s Neighborhood Traffic Management Program has received 50 requests citywide for traffic control in neighborhoods. City engineers are now in the process of prioritizing the requests.

“They'll look at different characteristics of the street, such as traffic volume, accident history, any hazardous conditions that are noted. Once all that information has been compiled, a recommended listing of ranking will be presented to city council,” said Julie Baldwin, El Paso City spokeswoman.

It will then be up to city representatives to vote on and approve the list, and projects will be completed so long as there’s funding. Baldwin said the city has allocated $1 million for the program, which takes applications and requests every six months.

The city’s Neighborhood Traffic Management Program was initiated in June 2008, and works to implement alternative traffic devices such as traffic circles.

It could be months before residents on Bandolero Drive see changes, and that's only if the city approves them. For now, they can only hope something gets done, said McLain, “Give us all the help they can because this is a dangerous situation. Sooner or later someone's going to get killed.”

To submit a request call 541-4050, or you can visit the city's website www.elpasotexas.gov.
