Car Show To Be Held Weekly At Fox Plaza

Car Enthusiasts Hope It Ends Impromptu Car Shows

By Martina Valverde

EL PASO, Texas —

Up to 500 cars can pack into the back parking lot of Fox Plaza every Wednesday in an organized showcase. That means no arrests and no towed vehicles.

In March, El Paso police surrounded an east El Paso shopping center after several cars and people piled in for an impromptu car show. It led to 44 arrests and more than 30 cars being impounded.

"We have things all over town for people to do, but there's no place for you to bring your car," said Tommy Horn, of Dick Poe Scion.

There are also no places to cruise, since El Paso City Council banned it on several streets in 2002.

"Everybody drives an automobile. A lot of people showing them off," said Horn.

So Horn along with El Paso Street Scene came up with an idea.

"We approached the city council, and Emma Acosta was very willing to work with us," he said.

Wednesday was the official start of El Paso Night Shift Nights. It will be held weekly at 9 p.m. Along with the cars, there will be food and movies for the kids, but more importantly, Horn said, it will decrease the number of car enthusiasts illegally gathering.

"For the 800 to 900 people that will be here tonight, it will stop it for them,” he said.

Horn admits it won't put an end to the problem all together.

He said, "Will there be a few renegades around town? Probably, and hopefully we'll change that."

Fox Plaza business owners like the idea, too.

"I'm OK with this," said Sam Svarkowski.

Especially since it is advertisement for the businesses and since it will provide extra security.

"Yeah, yeah, but not very much concerned about that because the building is closed at 7 o'clock, it's secure," he said.

There is a cost of $3 per person. Horn said that will pay for 10 El Paso police officers who will be at Fox Plaza only to observe, not make arrests, but he hopes once those costs are covered, the rest will go to charities.
