Car crashes through neighbor's yard, a frequent pattern for an east side neighborhood

EL PASO, Texas —

A late-night crash Sunday on the east side at the corner of Escarpa Drive and Album Avenue has neighbors fed up because they said it's not the first time drivers have come within feet of where they sleep.

Sunday night, a driver heading down Album Avenue lost control and plowed right through illuminated poles the city of El Paso put up to protect the homes along the troubled street.

Now with the barriers destroyed, neighbors are asking the city to look at what else can be done.

Eva Ortiz grew up in the home on the corner where her parents still live, and she now lives next door. Ortiz said Sunday night's crash is just one of about 20 crashes she has witnessed in the past 36 years.

This recent accident caused flying debris to shatter Ortiz's car window and damage the car's body while it was parked in her parent's'driveway.

Ten years ago, Ortiz said her dad asked the city to put up a curve sign to warn drivers, which they did. The city also added illuminated posts in front of the Ortiz home but it still hasn't stopped the frequent wrecks.

Right across the street is Eastwood Middle school.

Neighbors said while most of the accidents happen at night, they are concerned for all the children and neighbors who frequently walk through the area.

"This area is highly used for people walking their dogs, the kids going to school. One or these days there is going to be tragedy," said Ortiz.

Neighbors said they would like to see the the city put in speed bumps, which is something they've asked for in the past.

The city's transportation department said it is looking into possible solutions for the problem area. Installing speed bumps could require a petition from homeowners in the area.

But the city can only do so much. At some point, it's the drivers who need to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings.

Residents said drivers frequently speed and ignore the school zone restrictions, even bypassing the stop signs. They'd like to see more patrols in the area.

"They'd be giving out tickets right and left," said Ortiz.
