CANUTILLO, Texas —
Canutillo's school board is taking action to move forward with plans to terminate Superintendent Damon Murphy's contract. According to school board members, no new information has been provided to contradict he was involved in a cheating scheme.
DuringĀ a closed session, board members also discussed writing a response to the Texas Education Association who is reviewing a district's internal audit.
Tuesday's meeting started at 6 p.m. and school board members went into executive session at 8:40 p.m. to discuss the future of the Canutillo superintendent.
According to Gustavo Reveles, CISD's spokesman, the district is trying to reach a "mutual agreement of separation."
Reveles said no action was expected to happen at Tuesday's meeting.
"We post certain items to make sure we're able to address it. If not, we can't address any of those agenda items. So that's why we posted it so we would be cautious because if anything has developed or any type of conversation we wanted to have at today's meeting we are able to have that," said Armando Rodriguez, school board president for Canutillo ISD.
The school board decided to move forward with steps to fire Murphy after the board was given complete information on an audit on the school's transfer credit procedures. The CISD internal auditors presented their information to the board and said they found enough evidence to indicate that some students were moved up a grade during mid-year to avoid a 10th-grade assessment test. Those students were a group of Limited English Proficiency students.
It is anticipated that the final procedures for termination will take place on Dec. 27.
Murphy is also accused of being involved in El Paso Independent School District's cheating scandal.
