Canutillo ISD Has Plan To Fight Future State Budget Cuts

By Lauren Rozyla

EL PASO, Texas —

Canutillo Independent Schools have made a plan to fight Texas state budget cuts.

"As we started the year, and started hearing that the legislative session would result in some additional cuts, we realized we first of all had to stay firm with staffing," said Marta Aguirre, the district's chief financial officer. "We needed to make sure that additional positions were not created without permission."

District representatives said they lost nearly $2.2 million dollars in state budget cuts.

"It was clearly evident that we were not going to be solvent just by keeping the status quo in our staffing and our organization," Aguirre said.

The plan to keep the budget balanced included cutting about 60 positions, monitoring the creation of additional positions and monitoring the use of supplies. Aguirre said they also changed the fiscal year.

Those efforts combined ended up saving the district about $4 million.

"When the legislative session finalized the cuts, and the district had a $2.2 million cut, we were actually in a very good place," Aguirre said.

The state recommends each district have about three months of operating funds in their account. The district looks like it will be in that situation.

However, with the cuts of 60 positions, the classrooms will be more crowded, which teachers tell KFOX14, can interfere with learning. The class sizes could jump from 18 to 20 students, to up to 24 students per class, per a state waiver, according to Aguirre.

Currently, CISD is the largest employer in the district, according to the district's website.

District representatives said they expect about $1 million dollars in cuts next fiscal year, but because of these cost saving measures, and the passage of the T.R.E., they should be fiscally sound.
