Candidates In Runoff For Council Seat

EL PASO, Texas —

Residents in east and central El Paso have concerns but no one to speak up for them at city council. By next week voters will decide who will be the next city council District 3 representative.

Voters said they are concerned about the storm water fee and hope their new representative will do something about it. “If they can lower that storm water fee, that’d be great “ said East El Paso resident Cesar Saucedo.

Voters will choose between Naomi Gonzalez and Emma Acosta.

“I think that we need to reduce the rates,” said Gonzalez. “I think the mayor and city council are doing the right thing by listening to the public.”

Acosta agrees that it needs adjusting.

“I think it was done haphazardly,” said Acosta. “We need to put a little more thought into it.”

There are issues of concern for both candidates like Gonzalez’s lack of experience in city government.

“I bring experience to the table and I don’t think my opponent is the only one who can hit the ground running.” Gonzalez said.

Concerns have also been raised about an equal employment complaint that Acosta filed against the city and an embezzlement scandal that happened under her watch as director over the city’s waste solid waste department. Acosta was not involved in the scandal.

“It was a very well thought out scheme. It was not something that you could easily see on any piece of paper,” Acosta said. The new council member could change the dynamics of how the council votes.

“Sort of by default where District 3 is located you sort of have to be that swing vote in certain situations,” Gonzalez said.

El Paso mayor John Cook has endorsed Acosta and the El Paso division of the Mexican American Bar Association has endorsed Gonzalez. She is president elect of that organization.

Early voting is underway. The election is June 7.
