Candidates Forum Shows Agreement On Some Issues

Candidates for major local offices turned out to a community forum Sunday.

Those vying for state senator, county judge, county commissioner in Precinct 2 and county attorney showed up to answer a number of major questions, but most of the answered sounded similar.

All agreed that colonias in the county should be equipped with proper sewage and water service. All also agreed to oppose any anti-immigration laws and opposed the sheriff’s involvement in immigration enforcement.

Additionally, all candidates agreed to help maintain University Medical Center as a place where uninsured and indigent individuals will be able to receive health care.

Despite, many of the answers being the same from the candidates, those running from county attorney agreed that the forum was still helpful.

"I think these are good things, I don't think we have enough of them. So I think this is a really a wonderful opportunity for them to come and see me and me to see them," said Theresa Caballero, candidate for county attorney.

"It is always productive to be in a group where citizens are there expressing what their needs are,” said Jo Anne Bernal, incumbent El Paso County Attorney.

It should be noted that Liza Montelongo, candidate for state senator, did not attend the forum. It is unclear why she was not in attendance.
