Candidates For U.S. Senate Speak To KFOX

EL PASO, Texas —

The three people vying for the one U.S. Senate seat from Texas are current U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, Texas state Rep. Rick Noriega, a Democrat, and Yvonne Shick, a Libertarian.

All three candidates agree on one thing: The big issue is the economy.

"We need to make Washington, D.C., more like Texas, because we've seen last year in Texas alone 30 percent of all the new jobs created in America were created right here," said Cornyn.

"I think we got to get back to the basics; No. 1 is we're going to have to tighten our belts. I'm a pay-as-you-go policy maker; That's what you do in the state of Texas. If you don't have the money to buy things just like Texas families, then you can't spend it," said Noriega.

"If we are going to be a free and prosperous nation, I think we've got to get back to the basics. We have to get back to constitutionally limited government, lower taxes, a belief in sound money and personal freedom," said Shick.

All three also spoke to KFOX about border security and the federal government's fence now being built in El Paso.

"That's one of the most foolish things that we have ever done. They needed to build that wall around Washington, D.C., maybe so that those people wouldn't get out of there," said Noriega.

"We've got to stop the illegal immigration, and we've got to get control of that again," Shick told KFOX.

"I think we all understand that we need to know who's coming into the United States and why they are here, and the same broken borders can be exploited by gangs and drug traffickers as it can by someone who wants to work," said Cornyn.

The candidates also talked to us about what they did, or will do, for El Pasoans. Shick said she will let El Pasoans live their lives the way they want to with limited government interference. Cornyn talked about how being on the Senate Armed Services Committee helped Fort Bliss receive more troops. Noriega pledged to open up his West Texas Senate office in El Paso, if elected.
