British man in Iran missile case ordered to appear in court

By Jamel E. Valencia

EL PASO, Texas —

A British man accused of selling missile parts to Iran is scheduled to appear in a federal court next month.

Christopher Tappin is accused of trying to buy batteries for Hawk surface-to-air missiles from undercover American agents with the intention of exporting them to Iran.

Tappin left federal custody in El Paso in April after a federal magistrate gave final approval to his bail conditions.

The 65-year-old must wear a tracking device and live within five miles of his Houston-based attorney while he awaits trial.

Tappin is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing on Nov. 1.
