EL PASO, Texas —

The Biomedical Institute of the Americas has made its first hire and now they're trying to bring more biomedical business to the sun city.

With more business brings the opportunity for more jobs, but that's not all the company is planning for.

"What are their needs? What are they going to need to continue to succeed in our region? What will keep them here? What will keep them happy?," said Stephen Voglewede, the assistant director for the competitive group at the Biomedical Institute.

Voglewede says to think of the biomedical group as a gardener.

He said, "Going out, finding what kinds of research will have the biggest impact in the community, planting that research so that it can grow."

As assistant director for the competitive group at the institute, Voglewede's job is to create an environment where other companies will want to come to the El Paso region and establish their operations here.

Vogelwede says this industry is important to the area and the amount of research taking place is unmatched.

"To commercialize that research would provide lots of jobs to the region in addition to improving health in the region," said Voglewede.

He believes the borderland is prime real estate, saying the more than 80 percent Hispanic population of the region is representative of what the U.S. will look like in the future.

Vogleweed added, "We think we're in the best position to sort of tackle the kinds of health issues that the Hispanic population is facing."

The competitive group wants to plant the seeds early -- by encouraging students in the biomedical field to stay instead of leaving to where more jobs are potentially available.

"Here you will do the research, here you will create the medicine, and then here you will get treatment. You won't have to go to Anderson you won't have to go to Mayo Clinic .You will have world class health care here in El Paso."
