Brian Engleton Trial Day 2: New details emerge in murder case

EL PASO, Texas —

Trial resumed Tuesday for Brian Engleton, the man accused of stabbing his wife to death outside of a northeast El Paso beauty salon in 2011.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys spent most of the time arguing whether or not Engleton's rights were violated by police because they had faulty video equipment during his initial interviews with detectives, and because officers allegedly gave him no means of contacting an attorney when he requested one.

Defense attorney Veronica Lerma grilled detective Pete Lozano about a man named "Moe," the man Deidre Engleton was allegedly having an affair with. She asked why an investigation was never opened on a possible lover in Deidre's life.

"So you didn't investigate whether Moe was in El Paso on June 16, 2011, didn't investigate the relationship, didn't investigate Moe's criminal history or include him in a field of suspects?" Lerma asked Lozano.

"Correct," Lozano replied.

Prosecutor Jennifer Vandenbosch played a video to the jury of Engleton making a statement to the media while he is being walked to jail.

In the video, Engleton says, "I just want to say her mom, her sister, her friend Carroll, the guy she was having an affair with; all of them are responsible for this."

There was one moment when Vandenbosch and defense attorney Frank Macias got into a heated argument, ending with a discussion with Judge Maria Salas Mendoza, prompting some of the jurors to smirk because of the drama.

Prosecutors continue to present their case, and the trial will resume Wednesday.
