Breaking News: Juno And Savannah Stay

El Paso City Council Members voted Wednesday morning to keep Juno and Savannah at the Zoo. The decision comes after months of controversy over the issue. Animal Activists say a move to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is needed for Juno and Savannah's health, but those opposed to the idea say the move would be detrimental to the El Paso Zoo and its visitors.

City Council will revisit the issue in six months. In that time they will also explore a proposal to build an elephant sanctuary right here in El Paso. That plan would cost $5.5 to 6 million and would take up two parks right next to the zoo. City councilors are also looking at expanding Juno and Savannah's current exhibit from 9/10 of an acre to an acre and a half. That change would cost $50,000 to $60,000.

This morning's vote was unanimous. Animal activists say they're not finished fighting, and are now talking about suing the city to get the elephants to the sanctuary.
