Bowling Tournament Puts El Paso In National TV Spotlight

EL PASO, Texas —

It is called the Queens Tournament, and five of the best women bowlers in the world competed at the El Paso Convention Center on Wednesday in front of a national TV audience.

"The Queens is the most prestigious title in women's bowling," said Tennelle Milligan, the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The Queens Tournament brought the cameras of ESPN2, and the crowds and the stiff competition to El Paso.

"I'm feeling nervous, excited, I'm just ready to go, I have to wait four matches until I get to go on, so I get to do a lot of watching and pacing," Milligan told KFOX.

This tournament is as much about the bowling as the city and venue it is played out in.

"It's awesome. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event for El Paso, and it's just great," said Theresa Rodriguez, who was in the crowd for the finals.

Rodriguez said the women she's met from out of town have loved the Sun City, especially because it's lived up to its name.

"Some ladies from Chicago were out in the sun, and they were totally sunburned because it was snowing back there, it was bad weather, and here they were just like totally, 'We can't believe the sun, we're baked!'" she said.

For two straight hours, El Paso was front and center for the entire country to see on national TV.

"Especially right now when its related to the events in Juarez, it's just a positive thing, it's just showing how much our community is a wonderful community to be in," said Rodriguez.
