Borderland Under Winter Storm Warning Tuesday

EL PASO, Texas —

It's beginning to feel like a real winter across El Paso, as a cold snap has residents grabbing their coats.

"I love cold days, rainy days. It's just the best for me," said Luis Acosta, of Central El Paso.

But fire officials said the cold needs to come with caution.

Slick roads across the area has many taking their time as they drove.

An 18-wheeler lost control and rolled Sunday night on the Loop 375 near the new Spur 601 highway. Officials said wet roads and wind likely factors that sent the truck plowing into the guardrail and a fence.

And it isn’t just roads that residents should be careful about.

"The biggest risk that we see through this time of year is carbon monoxide poisoning," said Lt. Mario Hernandez, of the El Paso Fire Marsal’s office.

Hernandez warned that with many trying to keep warm, a well maintained heater should be the way to go. Many make the bad decision and choose to use their stoves and ovens to warm their homes.

"Those are appliances meant for cooking. People use those appliances to keep their house warm, and of course that's when they get in trouble with carbon monoxide," said Hernandez

The El Paso area will be under a winter storn warning from 5 a.m. Monday morning until 5 a.m. Tuesday.
