Borderland Soldier Holds Donation Drive For Joplin Tornado Victims

By Stephanie Guadian

EL PASO, Texas —

Joplin, Mo., is no longer making headlines after last month's devastating tornado nearly wiped the town off the map. But people living there are still in desperate need of help.

Sgt. Brian Wilkins is making it his mission to collect and deliver donations to his hometown. The Fort Bliss soldier barely recognizes Joplin today. Wilkins' family still lives there. They survived the storm, but are among the thousands left with close to nothing.

The sergeant is now down to the last 48 hours of his donation drive and is in need of help. The 20-foot U-HAUL he plans to drive from El Paso to Joplin is far from full. "I need more help. Any type of donation. I was initially looking for stuffed animals and kids' toys. But right now anything will help," said Wilkins. Bedding, clothing, furniture and toys are especially needed.

There is still time to donate. Wilkins plans to leave El Paso on Saturday morning. Up until then donations are being accepted at the Armed Services YMCA.

This is just one of the missions Wilkin's is working on. He and his fellow soldiers are about to leave Fort Bliss for Iraq. "They gave us two weeks before we deploy. So, I will be spending my two weeks in Joplin. After we deliver all the donations, I will be volunteering up there to clear the streets," said Wilkins.

It will be a long time before Joplin recovers, but donations from the Borderland will help Wilkins' family and others to rebuild their hometown and their lives.
