Body shops prepare for an influx of snow-damaged vehicles

The body shop business in El Paso is dealing with the damage caused by snow and the ice from this week's snowstorms.

Crystal Esqueda is one of the many people who were in an accident during the storms. She skidded into the back of a tow truck that was helping another car.

"I started slowing down, but there was ice on the road. I started sliding and before I could move to the side, we hit the back of the tow truck," said Esqueda.

Ernie Medina, a body shop technician at International Collision Center, said the snow may not be falling anymore, but the danger is far from over.

"Black ice can allow the vehicle to get away from you. Once a car starts in a skid, to try to get control over it again, it's pretty impossible," said Medina.

He recommends reporting claims right away and researching local collision centers.

"By law you can chose your repair facility. You should try and get some references. Sometimes the insurance company might be able to point you in the right direction," said Medina.

Most importantly, you should take whatever steps you can to prevent an accident from happening.

"Make sure you've done the maintenance on the vehicle, inflated the tires properly, and if you don't have to go out, don't go out," said Medina.
