LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Police are asking the community for help identifying anyone involved in the slaying of a 62-year-old man whose body was found near a canal Friday.

James David Vaugh, who is believed to be a transient but lived in Las Cruces for a couple of years, was found dead along an irrigation canal that runs perpendicular to Amador Avenue east of Valley Drive. His body was found covered with a blanket when a pedestrian walking in the area saw it and called police around 6 p.m., officials said.

Police are hoping to speak with two other transients who they believe know Vaughn. One is identified as a man known by the moniker “Chaos” and is described as white, 20 to 30 years old with dirty blond hair. The other transient, a woman known as “Cyclone,” may be wearing military-style clothes, boots and a hat.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of “Chaos” or “Cyclone” or any other information is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. A $2,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest.
