EL PASO COUNTY, Texas —

El Paso County Sheriff's deputies said a body was found in the Hueco Tanks area on Gas Line Road and Montana Avenue on Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the body was identified as Johnnyray Nevarez, 27, according to Chris Acosta, spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

Acosta said hikers found Nevarez's body inside a vehicle about four miles off the road.

Preliminary investigations show that the person may have a self-inflicted wound, but the possibility of a homicide has not been ruled out, Acosta said.

This body may be connected to a bigger investigation that is going on in Socorro.

According to David Garcia, a public information officer with the city of Socorro, Socorro police investigators received a call around noon Monday from a man who said his friend had murdered his 20-year-old wife and dumped her body across the El Paso border in Mexico.

This man, claiming to be a friend of the family, also said his 27-year-old friend was going to kill himself, Garcia said.

Socorro police investigators were able to prove this story to be true after searching the couple's home on Aaker Street in Socorro.

An all-points bulletin led police to find what they believe to be the 27-year-old man's car pulled over in Red Sands in Montana Vista, Garcia said.

Socorro police and El Paso County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating this case.
