Some Southcentral El Paso residents have been fighting a lose-lose battle for years.
"You can only move a truck so much before the stink gets to you, even at if the trucks are 30 yards away the stink is here," said Jorge Cisneros.
El Paso Disposal's parking lot sits across the street from his home on Euclid Street. The 75 of the company's dump trucks are kept in this lot overnight. Even though they are emptied beforehand, the smell overpowers the neighborhood, more so during hot days.
It's a problem the neighborhood has faced since the company moved in almost seven years ago. Residents said they have brought up the issue before, but since not much has been done, they've given up. However, the company states it wasn't aware of the problem until KFOX contacted them about the story.
El Paso disposals said the trucks are washed weekly, but for Cisneros and others that's not enough to keep the stench from getting into their homes.
"The swamp coolers bring it in. We have evaporative coolers, and they absorb all the air that's coming through so they put all that air inside the house," said Cisneros.
For those who live nearby it's like being next to a dumpster 24/7. The only thing between their homes and the trucks is a cement wall, but that's not going to keep the smell away. The only time they get some sort of relief is either when the trucks are out in the field, or when the wind blows away from their homes.
Even then, neighbors said they have to deal with pests. "We have a lot of problem with flies and with the mice," said Fransisca Duenas.
El Paso Disposal said it will review its policies and procedures to try and address the issue.
To file a complaint with the El Paso City-County Health Department's Air Quality division, you can call 543-3599. They'll work with El Paso Disposal to reduce the bad smell and the dirty water coming from the parking lot.
