"I know there's a lot of people that are opposed to it. But we got to do it now. If we lose out on this opportunity, who knows when it's going to come back?" said Ernesto Armendariz, owner of La Perfumeria in downtown El Paso.

Today's decision by the mayor to move forward with the plans to build the ballpark in downtown El Paso has generated quite the buzz.

"Retail, offices, businesses are starting to pop up. We're getting a lot of phone calls," said Dennis Melonas, executive director of the El Paso Central Business Association.

The El Paso Central Business Association unanimously voted weeks ago to fully support and endorse the stadium.

Melonas added, "We look forward to the conservation and preservation of the downtown shopping district, which is the oldest continuously used mixed retail."

Though the the city just got the go ahead, wheels are already turning.

"One thing we can do is mix in promotions with baseball and other sporting events with retail which is something we've already discussed with other colleagues," said Melonas.

Armendariz owns several shops downtown and he's hoping to open another one in closer proximity to the ballpark.

"Most definitely. I just talked to some people at our corporate offices and that is going to be one of the things we're going to look into," he said.

Both business owners and those with the CBA believe this is a big step in the downtown revitalization process.

"We do want to make a change in El Paso. They're doing their part, let's do our part as merchants down here. Let's make our stores clean let's make them look good. We do our part, they do their part," said Armendariz.
