EL PASO, Texas —

Pediatric specialists weren't easy to find in El Paso until the Children's Hospital opened.

Some of the doctors who work there recently saved a baby girl with a surgery that couldn't be performed anywhere else in the city.

Ashley DeHaro turned 4 months old at the hospital Wednesday. She's recovering after an emergency surgery she underwent last week.

Texas Tech & El Paso Children’s Hospital Pediatric Surgeon Dr. William Spurbeck, who performed the operation, said she's lucky in more ways than one. Her family happened to be in the right place at the right time and that helped save her life.

Ashley's family is from Colorado but was in El Paso for a wedding last week.

Her mom, Marivelle Diaz, said Ashley had been sick before coming to El Paso but after a doctor's visit and trip to the ER back home, she was told it was nothing serious.

"They said she just might have a virus in her tummy and that it would go away by itself. They told me to give her Pedialyte. The ER said the same thing," said Diaz.

After arriving in El Paso, Ashley got worse. Diaz said she wouldn't eat and started throwing up green and yellow.

Thursday night they rushed her to another local hospital but they couldn't treat her and transferred her to the El Paso Children's Hospital.

"I was so scared. They did some X-rays on her and the doctor said that she was really sick and needed to be operated on right away," said Diaz.

Pediatric radiologist Dr. Steven Ross was called in and diagnosed an intestinal mal rotation. She was rushed to the operating room where Spurbeck was waiting to begin surgery.

"Mal rotation is rotational problem with the intestines. It's found in about 1 out of 500 births. It's more common than Down syndrome," said Spurbeck.

"It's one of the most common pediatric emergencies. It's the one we learn about first actually in radiology because you have to take care of it right away. You diagnosis it quickly because they have to go straight to surgery so they don't lose their bowel or die," said Ross.

Ashley's operation was a success and both doctors said she'll make a full recovery and can go home soon.

The El Paso Children's Hospital has hired 41 pediatric specialists and plans to hire many more.
