EL PASO, Texas —

A pavilion inspired by the Aztec calendar and created by artists who showcase their artwork at Coachella, offers electricity to people in downtown El Paso.

The solar-powered Aztec Calendar Pavilion sits at 605 N. Sante Fe St., next to the future location of the downtown baseball stadium.

It's structure, made of steel and solar panels, provides electricity to outlets that people can use to charge their electronic devices.

Patricia Dalbin, manager of Public Art for El Paso, said the space where the pavilion is at was never active before.

A group of artists from Los Angeles, Poetic Kinetics, designed the gazebo-type structure with El Paso culture in mind.
The group is known for installations displayed at the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals.

The project was paid for by funds given to the city of El Paso through the Recovery Act of 2009.

The Aztec calendar at the top of the pavilion can also be viewed when the sun hits it from above, projecting its image onto the ground.

A musician at Thursday's ribbon-cutting ceremony powered his instruments using the pavilion's energy.
