Austin High School Fire Tech Students help install smoke detectors

EL PASO, Texas —

The Newman Park Neighborhood Association, Austin High School Fire Tech Students and members of the El Paso Fire Department worked to try and prevent fires in a Lower Valley neighborhood.

The outreach effort in Newman Park, located between Alabama and Louisiana, included installing free smoke detectors in neighborhood homes, handing out Home Safety Surveys, taking requests for future safety surveys and smoke detector requests.

Fire officials told KFOX14 that this year's initiative focuses on elderly neighbors who may not otherwise know of the home fire safety survey and smoke detector installation services.

Within the first part of the year, that neighborhood has suffered two residential fires in immediate proximity to each other., fire officials said. Both homes suffered large dollar-amount damages, and were occupied by elderly people. Fire officials said both fires were accidental and preventable.

Contact the El Paso Fire Department for more information on receiving a free smoke detector.
