EL PASO, Texas —

A puppy with a rubber band wrapped around its tail was found wandering in a person's back yard.

Officials with El Paso's Animal Services said they are investigating the incident as an animal cruelty case.

The puppy's tail had to be amputated because it had become gangrenous.

Officials said a concerned resident took the female boxer puppy to Animal Services, 5001 Fred Wilson, on July 27.

"Wrapping a dog's tail with a rubber band to cut it off is not an uncommon practice in El Paso," Animal Services veterinarian Bernie Page said. "Cutting a dog's tail is not necessary. It's mainly for cosmetic purposes on certain breeds like dobermans and poodles. The tail should only be removed by a veterinarian."

Officials said the puppy will be available for adoption once she recovers from surgery.
