KFOX-TV, the Cox Television station serving El Paso/Las Cruces, is seeking a leader for our News Assignment Desk. Among our 265 journalism awards in the past seven years, we’ve received two National Edward R. Murrow awards, nine Emmy Awards, and the Texas AP Award for Overall Excellence. Do you have what it takes to direct the news coverage of the market leader?

SUMMARY: Position demands responsibility for editorial decisions and newscast content. Candidate must demonstrate the management skills necessary to supervise and direct a diverse news staff including reporters and photographers. Candidate must be able to determine the daily news agenda and deploy reporters and camera crews to effectively cover all the important stories of the day. Must develop news contacts and interact effectively with the public, as well as government & industry officials. Must react to live breaking news situations and be able to adapt to a changing news environment while quickly determining newscast priorities and meet all deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Oversee news coverage by collaborating with news managers and newscast producers. Research and plan for future coverage as well as events of the day. Develop and assign story ideas to reporters and photographers. Obtain and maintain background information on a variety of stories and issues.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan, coordinate and supervise all the people and activities necessary to insure a balanced, accurate news organization following the KFOX format, policy and guidelines.

WORK HOURS: This position requires flexible hours that will require duties to be performed predominantly at KFOX-TV. Successful candidate will be required to work numerous holidays and fill n as appropriate for other employees at various times and in various job specialties. Position is salaried and exempt from overtime, but KFOX will make reasonable attempts to provide compensatory time for extra or extraordinarily long work days.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: B.A. or B.S. from four-year college or university in Journalism or Broadcasting. Professional experience may be substituted for certain educational requirements. Familiarity with newsroom assignment desk operations is required, and a minimum of three years experience in a commercial television newsroom is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and news stories in a concise, balanced manner free of bias, distortion or poor taste. Ability to understand Spanish is preferred but not required.

REASONING ABILITY: Must be thoroughly professional in all aspects of journalism. Must be well read on current affairs and have a wide-range working knowledge and understanding of general interest subjects. Must be able to manage personnel issues in a timely and discreet manner.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Use of two-way radio, telephone, INEWS computer system, Microsoft Office, and typing skills required.
