As New Year Rolls In, Fire Inspectors Will Be Watching

Bar hopping will be a common activity Wednesday night for thousands of Borderland residents hitting the town to welcome the New Year. While bars will get packed, the El Paso Fire Marshal's Office will be out to make sure clubs don’t get too packed and end up breaking the law.

"They sell tickets, and sometimes they sell more than they can fill in and they get an overabundance of people,” said John Concha of the El Paso Fire Department.

To make sure bars are staying safe and keeping to their legal capacity limits, inspectors will start club hopping themselves, looking for violations.

Rick Cardona is the manager of Craw Daddy's on Cincinnati Street. Even though there will be hundreds of people out, he can only have 75 people inside at a time.

"We are never over capacity; we make sure we have our people at the door that make sure that we don't do that," Cardona said.

Fire officials will also be looking for other code violations.

"The most common item that needs to be corrected is usually blocked exits," Concha said.

If the club cannot quickly unblock a door, the club will be closed down because exits are so vital to having party-goers escape safely in the event of a fire.

Fire officials remind partiers to locate all exits at bars, including ones they may not notice right away.

The inspections don’t worry the crew at Craw Daddy’s.

"The safety of our clients and customers comes first," Cardona said. "We want people that want to have a good time, you know, celebrate New Year’s Eve and just have a good time."
