It's a town split by a state line, therefore things are run differently on both towns of Anthony. Currently, the majority of the growth is happening in Anthony, Texas, and it's only a matter of time before it crosses the state line.
The land across Anthony High School is leveled, and soon a third new subdivision will be going up. Mayor Art Franco said another one has already been approved. The rapid growth is not going unnoticed.
"Yes, there's a lot of growth in the area. Near the Flying J there are new homes being built, and it's like that everywhere," said Israel Garcia from Anthony, N.M.
The growth is especially noticeable in Anthony, Texas, where two major businesses will start construction in April. One of them is a Foxworth-Galbraith, a lumber manufacturing company. Franco said the $5 million is expected to bring 150 jobs to the area.
The other business moving to the area has not been announced.
Franco said the town is getting ready for the future.
"We're at the present time applying for grants to double the size of our sewer plant and increase our water capacity," he said.
Aside from a state line dividing the town of Anthony, the Texas side has its own government, its own mayor, and city council. It's able to make its own decision. The New Mexico side depends on Dona Ana County Commissioners for all decisions in the area.
"In the New Mexico side, I hate to say it but there's less assistance from Las Cruces for Anthony, N.M.," said Franco.
Dona Ana County officials said there are no intentions for Anthony, N.M. to have its own government and be an incorporated municipality. In order for that to happen, residents would need to start a petition, and then it would be up for a vote.
