Animal service center in Las Cruces sees huge recent influx of puppies

By Gina Benitez

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley is seeing an influx in animals -- a problem that's continuing to grow. The solution, said the executive director, is a very easy fix.

"There's really no reason not to have your animal spayed and neutered," said Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, the executive director of the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley.

But in Dona Ana County it seems like not fixing your pet, is more common than doing it.

"Well, in about the last week and a half, started in the middle of the week before last, about 75 puppies come in," said Dr. Vesco-Mock.

All types of young pups being held at the shelter -- some with moms, some without. Breeds both large and small. Some just a few weeks old, not even ready to be adopted out.

"You know, I'm begging for fosters, I even got my grandsons to foster one little puppy because we just have too many," said Dr. Vesco-Mock.

Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock said one of her initial goals when she came to the animal service center in the Mesilla Valley was to provide an affordable spaying and neutering program -- which the center did.

"It gets frustrating, cause you feel like we're not getting anywhere. You would like to be rising above the tide and we're just barely paddling along right now," said Dr. Vesco-Mock.

The center fixes at least one pregnant animal a day, on average.

Dr. Vesco-Mock said if the services weren't provided, the situation would be much worse.

"If you're not willing to house, the litter, that that dog produces for its entire life, then you should not be breeding," said Dr. Vesco-Mock.

The center offers affordable spays and neuters at $35 and $25 each.
