Ambulance Trip Will Cost Patients More

By Renee Narvaiz

EL PASO, Texas —

Taking a trip to the hospital is going to cost a bit more.

The El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday to begin charging for the first mile of transportation in El Paso Fire Department ambulances. The first mile was once free of charge.

They say it will save taxpayers upwards of $450,000 a year.

Chief Otto Drozd of the El Paso Fire Department said, "Really, the billing is secondary to the emergency service that we provide and the car that we give to the citizens of El Paso."

Until now, El Paso was the only city in Texas that offered the first mile free.
