Amber Cards First Line Of Defense Against Child Abductions

July 27, 2006 —

At Secure Living, kids learn more than just martial arts. They're learning about stranger danger.

"It helps me get away from strangers," said 7-year-old Anthony Flores.

Students as young as 4 years old are learning defense techniques against any type of predator.

"It could be anything from punching, kicking to biting to scratching... whatever is necessary for a child to be safe," said Ron Murphy, the chief instructor at Secure Living.

Murphy said even though self-defense is important for kids for all ages, having an updated picture ID card is the first line of defense.

The Amber ID cards are free and will help find your child if he or she goes missing for any reason. Parents will be able to get one at a safety fair coordinated by the El Paso Sheriff's Deparment and other agencies.

"In this day and age, there's so many craziness going on. This is just one tool to prepare the kids, get that Amber card," said Fernie Archondo, a parent.

While self-defense may come in handy for some kids, these students are also learning about whom to call.

"Police or fireman," said 5-year-old Ariana Anchondo.

And what to do before a predator strikes.

"I'll just run away," said Flores.

The safety fair will be held on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 9530 Viscount next door to the Rancher's Grill. Amber cards will be handed out, and participants will be taught about stranger danger, home security and much more.
