Alleged victim, alleged scam artist

EL PASO, Texas —

Nohemy Brown wanted to rent an apartment so she went to an ad on Craigslist. She found an offer that appeared to be a good deal.

The man who placed the ad only gave a first name, Greg. Greg claimed to be from a company called Vista Property Management. Greg asked Brown to put $250 on a Walmart “Money Pack” card without ever meeting her in person. He said this money was a deposit on his services and Brown says he promised her rentals listings in the $600 to $800 range.

“The listings were nowhere in that price range," Brown said. Unhappy with the service, Brown asked Greg for more listings.

"He (Greg) tells me he's going to set up an appointment at 10 a.m. the next morning, and he never comes through," said Brown.

Brown asked for her money back. She said he seemed hesitant and stopped returning her calls so she called Vista Property Management. That company told her that they did not have an employee named Greg and no one from their company was doing business in El Paso.

KFOX14 News reporter Ric Dupont also called Vista Property Management and they confirmed what Brown said.

Dupont contacted Greg through text messages and found out that his whole name is Gregory Mark Schwartz and his date of birth is 12-24-74.

Dupont found an old Los Angeles Times article that said Schwartz was arrested for an alleged rental scam in California in 1996. The details of the complaints in that case were very similar to the details of Brown’s story. Schwartz confirmed that he was arrested in California in1996.

Schwartz said that Brown will get a refund in 90 days but the article states that he’s made those kinds of promises before without keeping them.
