Alamo Fireworks Storage Request Denied

El Paso City Council Tuesday rejected a request from Alamo Fireworks to allow the company to sell and store fireworks out of a warehouse that lies within 5,000 feet of the El Paso city limits.

That distance is not allowed under the current ordinance, and the fire department opposed making any exceptions.

Fire officials noted how close Alamo was to last week's recycling yard fire in Montana Vista and its proximity to fuel storage tanks.

El Paso Fire Chief Roberto Rivera said, "We don't want to end up with a worst-case scenario during the Fourth of July season because this will make it easier for people to bring in fireworks into the city."

Firefighters also pointed out the limited water supply that's available in the area around the Alamo fireworks warehouse.
