Airport Wants More Non-Stop Flights

EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso International Airport wants to lure more non-stop flights to and from other cities, and they want to use some incentives to do it.

Air traveler Bill Lunger grew up in El Paso, but now lives in Dallas.

"It is more difficult to get in here to El Paso, DFW we can go in and out pretty much anywhere we want to. Here you are very limited on the flights and airlines you can come in and out," said Lunger.

So he's all about EPIA's efforts to bring more non-stop flights to the Sun City.

"I think it's a good idea. Anytime you can get more business into the airport or longer flights, it's better for the airport, better for the city, it'll bring more people in," Lunger told KFOX.

If an airline starts non-stop travel to and from major focus cities like Washington D.C., New York City, Detroit, Seattle, Lubbock, Charlotte, Toronto, Mexico City or Chihuahua, Mexico, the airline will get $25,000 in matching marketing funding from EPIA and landing fees slashed by 50 percent for a year. Non-focus and seasonal destinations would get reduced incentives.

"If we're in competition for another city, it may be that little bit that pushes us over the edge to get that service here," said Jeff Schultes with EPIA.

Airport officials hope to present an incentives plan to the City Council sometime in the next month.
