EL PASO, Texas —

A 4-month-old girl, Savannah Rose Valdes, remains in the hospital seven weeks after her father, an El Paso firefighter, hit her.

Police said they arrested Stephen Anthony Valdes, 27, was arrested earlier this week and has bonded out of jail.

Valdes' attorney, Luis Gutierrez, believes authorities had to make an arrest for the child's injuries but that Valdes isn't responsible.

"He's just saying, 'Look, I did not hit my child. I did not hurt my child. I tried to help my child. I did what any normal person would do," said Gutierrez.

According to the arrest affidavit, on Dec. 14, Valdes said he was feeding the infant when she started choking. He allegedly hit her on the back and called 911.

However, doctors said the infant received "massive injuries" to the head.

"We believe there were many people that were handling Savannah during that day. And it just so happened that Stephen picked up the baby maybe an hour or so before she started having breathing problems," said Gutierrez.

The affidavit said that the infant lost consciousness in Valdes' care, but he denies hurting the child.

The girl remains at Providence Children's Hospital, where she is on a ventilator and a feeding tube.

"There's never been any type of allegation and so this is not like a father that is just learning the ropes of being a father and patience and all those things that come with it," said Gutierrez.

A neighbor told KFOX14 that she hasn't seen Valdes and the girl's mother, and there are two children in the home, which she recently learned from Child Protective Services.
