EL PASO, Texas —

A juvenile probation officer from Alamogordo, N.M., is jailed without bond after officials say they found nearly 10 pounds of marijuana in his state vehicle at a Border Patrol checkpoint.

Homeland Security Investigations officials say Saul Velasco was arrested at the U.S. Highway 70 checkpoint west of Alamogordo Tuesday evening.

According to the criminal complaint affidavit, Velasco admitted to agents that he purchased marijuana earlier that morning while he met with a man near the Edge of Texas restaurant in El Paso.

Velasco told agents he paid $2,500 for 10 bundles of marijuana, which weighed a total of 10 pounds. He also said he planned to take the drugs to Alamogordo to sell it.

After the purchase, Velasco said he conducted home visits with persons serving probation sentences, and the marijuana stayed in a gym bag on the rear floorboards of Velasco's government vehicle.

He's being held at the Dona Ana County jail and is set for a court appearance at 9:35 a.m. Thursday. In the hearing, it will be determined if he will get bail.

Velasco has worked for the state Juvenile Probation Office since 2007.
