Acres Of Farmland Near Hatch Damaged By Flood

It's become an all-too familiar scene: water submerged into the ground in Hatch causing widespread flooding and devastation.

It's the case in the small community for the third time in two weeks after the Placitas Arroyo breached again. This time the water flooded nearby farms, but the majority of the devastation is west of Hatch where several farms are now inundated and miles of road are strewn with watermelon, debris and chile.

"It's pretty bad, I would say 80 percent of the crop is gone," said a farmworker, who didn't want to be identified.

He estimates the farm where he's worked the past several years has lost more than a million dollars. Much of the chile, onion, corn and watermelon was damaged by the flooding.

Down the road in Hatch, residents and farmers said they're hoping this third breach in the arroyo is the last one.
