A New Plan To Crack Down On School Dropouts

A New Plan To Crackdown On School Drop Outs

Sitting in front of a computer, Jacklyn Luevano is a dedicated student. But three years ago, she was a high school dropout. "I dropped out because I was working at the time, so I figured money was more important than my education," Luevano told KFOX. But after working as a waitress for a while, she changed her mind. "It was horrifying. You get tired and your feet are sore," recalled Luevano. "I saw that it was a dead-end job and that I was going to be working, working and getting nowhere." That's when she decided to hit the books again.

In December she'll walk away with a diploma from Sunset High School. El Paso Independent School District is hoping to reel in more students like Jacklyn or keep them from dropping out all together with the "Alpha Initiative. "The new dropout intervention program features an aggressive attendance and truancy plan. "If a student isn't coming to class, we find out why they're not coming," said EPISD Pupil Services Director Mark Mendoza. "Perhaps, they're having trouble with a class, perhaps they're having trouble at home." Even Dallas Cowboy legend Randy White showed up to help tackle the problem. "You know education, boy if you don't have education it's going to be tough," White said. The district's plan for retaining students includes a gang and family intervention program, a "zero tolerance" tardy policy, and recognizing school attendance at schools every six weeks.
