A Helmet For Every Sport

A new generation of kids has grown up with plenty of recreational options.

And with spring upon us, outdoor activities will be plentiful - as will the chance for injury.

Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is trying to make sure that people wear the appropriate protective helmet for every sport.

Hal Stratton of the commission said, "If you're riding horses, for instance, you have a different angle of attack when your head hits the ground, so you want to make sure you're protected in the right place."

The statistics say it all: Wearing a bike helmet can prevent 85% of head injuries and 88% of brain injuries. Still, in 2004, bicyclists received more than 150,000 head injuries that required trips to the emergency room.

But more parents are starting to roll with the idea. Patty Mitchell said she and her daughter Hailey have the routine down.

"We started with her wearing a helmet as a baby and she just doesn't know any other way," Mitchell said.

Karen Williams also said her children don't question it.

"Every time they get on a bike, they always put a helmet on," Williams said.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission does have one additional tip: If you bring a child to the playground, take their helmet off before allowing them to play because the chin strap can cause strangulation.

The commission has released a guide entitled "Which Helmet for Which Activity?" For more information, please call 1-800-638-2772 or click here.
